National Outlook

UPDATED: 1:54 pm CDT June 4, 2008

The middle of the week will bring continued chances for showers and storms along a relatively large area of the country. With a front parked south of the Great Lakes and a humid airmass across much of the eastern half of the country all the ingredients are in place for some strong storms from Chicago to Washington D.C. through this evening. Spotty storm coverage will spread into New York and Boston throughout the day. Meanwhile a new low pressure system forming across the southwestern Rockies will spread chances for showers in that region today before bringing another round to the Plains.

The storm chances stretching from southern New England through the Plains states will bring the opportunity for severe weather. Similar to the past couple days the primary widespread threat will continue to come from large hail and high winds in some of the stronger cells, though the chance for isolated tornadoes will continue. See the attached graphic for a look at the large area included in the slight risk for severe storms through tonight.

In the Rockies the developing system will not only bring showers to much of Utah and Colorado, but it will also bring gusty winds to much of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Thanks to dry conditions across this area fire danger will remain high through this afternoon. As the system exits the mountains we will see additional chances for showers and storms across the Plains through the second half of the week.
